I think it's sound logic to not want to be murdered or to start riots in the Middle East or raise more animosity toward the West for a popcorn movie. Maybe if it was an art film, and even then, it still wouldn't really be worth it. You have to pick your battles. Would you really want people to die for a quick shot of a mosque being destroyed in a ***** Roland Emmerich movie?

Actually, as much as I hate to be standing up for Mccain on a technology issue, this is somewhat the opposite of the bills Mccain has pushed for in the past. McCain's "anti-net neutrality" legislation pushed for decreased government regulation of ISP's, while this treaty would push for increased government regulation of ISP's. Now, granted both approaches would have virtually the same detrimental effect, and its entirely possible (perhaps probable) that Replublicans claim ISP regulation is bad for one bill, and good for another. However, based on the regulations that Republicans have been pushing, this treaty doesn't seem like it has their stench to it..

We are not only detecting planets that orbit other suns; for the past year, we have begun to image them. I think that's worthy of repeat. We are imaging planets outside of our solar system! In my opinion, Fomalhaut b and HR 8799 represent a milestone in human history in that they are visual evidence of other worlds. It is one thing to say that we have detected a planet using the transit, radial velocity, or gravitational microlensing methods, etc. It is quiet another to say that we have infrared images of those planets. No doubt, in the coming years, many of the 403 (and counting) extrasolar planets will also be imaged. But this is an exciting first step for humanity. How long before we image a terrestrial world, 1 to 2 times the mass of Earth? How long before we detect a verifiable life signature?
